STORIES
from around the world

The world is small...and getting smaller.  After travelling across the world to Rome, a friend of mine stood in front of that great old coliseum only to meet another Canadian.  Both were from a small town in Chilliwack, B.C. and lived near the other, but they had not  known of each other till that day.
Do you remember how some trailers before the main feature made you want to watch the full movie.  Our lives are foretaste of Heaven.  If others see us, they should see our lives as a foretaste of Heaven, making them elbow their friend to say, "I want to see the whole thing."  I believe there is a song that says it well..."and they will know we are Christians by our love."  For the Sunnyside Up show, I'm Rick Abma.

When visiting Israel someone asked me if I noticed that most vehicles had no colour but were either black or white.  I had not noticed until this was pointed out to me.   Of course, somone had to add that this was ironic due to the grey issues that existed in this country.  None of this is very sunny...or funny for that matter.  The reason for the black and white cars is that only the rich can afford colour.  Most would immediately define rich with $, but in life, those who are 'rich' in spirit and in truth are as obvious as the coloured cars in Israel.  For the Sunnyside Up Show...I'm Rick Abma.

The Devil and The Duck

There was a little boy visiting his grandparents on
their farm. He was given a slingshot to play with out in the woods.
He practiced in the woods, but he could never hit the
target. Getting a little discouraged, he headed back for dinner. As he
was walking back he saw Grandma's pet duck.
Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly, hit the
duck square in the head, and killed it. He was shocked and grieved.
In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the wood pile, only to see his
sister watching! Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing.
After lunch the next day Grandma said, "Sally, let's wash the dishes."
But Sally said, "Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the
kitchen." Then she whispered to him, "Remember the duck?" So Johnny
did
the dishes.
Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing and
Grandma said, "I'm sorry but I need Sally to help make supper." Sally
just smiled and said," Well that's all right because Johnny told me he
wanted to help." She whispered again, "Remember the duck?" So Sally
went fishing and Johnny stayed to help.
After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally's ... he
finally couldn't stand it any longer.
He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck.
Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug, and said,"Sweetheart, I know.
You see, I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing,
but because I love you, I forgave you. I was just wondering
how long you would let Sally make a slave of you."
Thought for the day and every day thereafter?
When our family lived in Honduras, we were amazed at:  1) how many people stared at us,     2) at the fact that no one heard of sour cream (I thought that sour cream was a given due to the staple of tacos and burritos), 3) when I was told that lawnmowing was done with a machete if I couldn' afford an actual mower, 4) the welder who came over to our house to do some work and hard-wired the welder right into the overhead power lines without thinking twice.    ....and my eyes were opened!  For the Sunnyside Up show, I'm Rick Abma.

I will never forget the day I discovered 50 hockey cards as I biked to school when I was 9 years old.  They were as old as I was, and are filled with memorable players.  This is an illustration of how discovery makes an impact on your life.  I use this to show how we need to read the Bible in order to discover who God is, or we may forget like you will if the discovery is not yours.
